After Future Business Leaders of America got back from the State Leadership Conference, the Brattleboro Reformer wrote an article about us which said, “The members of Maribeth Cornell’s team can now call themselves state high school champions. But they are unlikely to cruise around town on fire trucks or get a banner in the Brattleboro Union High School gymnasium.”
Apparently someone in the town of Brattleboro took notice: soon after the article ran we received phone calls from the town, saying that while we couldn’t ride on the fire trucks for insurance reasons, they would provide us with a float in the Strolling of the Heifers parade on June 8, 2013.
The opportunity to walk in the parade turned out to be a great experience and a wide variety of students got involved, including some who had not previously been very involved in FBLA.
It was a great experience for the entire town to be able to see us and take pride in what we accomplished, namely winning Chapter of the Year at our State Leadership Conference. This was an unusual way to celebrate when you consider that we are an academic organization, not a sports team. It was a great way for people, including prospective students, to see who we are and what we do.
We also gave back to our community by handing out lollipops to people in the crowd along the parade route. It was an incredible honor to have this float and it was a lot of fun. It truly was an amazing way to end a fantastic school year.
