Sam Rushton Named Windham Regional Career Center October Student
of the Month
Sam Rushton, a senior from Leland and Gray High School and a resident of Grafton, VT, has been named the October 2013 Windham Regional Career Center Student of the Month. Sam was nominated for this award by Dennis Hamilton, his Career Center instructor in Agricultural Land Management. Sam is additionally enrolled in Personal Finance at the Career Center.
According to Mr. Hamilton, Sam has demonstrated tremendous effort in his program and that he “understands that his job here [in school] is to work hard” and to take advantage of what he’s being offered. Mr. Hamilton added that “No one here works as hard as Sam does.” His investment in his education includes joining Mr. Hamilton for lunch most days to continue his questions and on-going conversations regarding his interest in agriculture.
Sam, who has been raised on the Rushton Farm in Grafton, intends to pursue a career in agriculture or other outdoor employment. Mr. Hamilton first met Sam six years ago when Sam signed up for a UVM extension service course in tractor safety that had been taught at the Career Center. That was Sam’s introduction to the Career Center, as well as to Mr. Hamilton, and he looked forward ever since to involving himself in coursework there.
Michael Burnett, Interim Director of the Career Center, initiated the WRCC Student of the Month to “promote our character education initiative and to encourage our students to better themselves in preparation for their future schooling and employment.”
Sam’s course this year at the career center is an outside environmental class working with land use, measurement, conservation, indigenous and invasive plants, and trees, wildlife, habitat, water, soils and drainage projects. Students also gain experience operating a variety of large and small forestry and farm equipment. Sam’s class is currently preparing to compete in a soil judging contest that will be held at Vermont Technical College.
The Windham Regional Career Center provides technical and career training to students from the following high schools: Brattleboro, Leland and Gray, Twin Valley, Bellows Falls, Hinsdale NH, as well as the Austine School.
